Breaking The Norm

Doing something you've never done before can be... scary.


It's fear of the unknown.


"What if people judge me?"


"What if I fail?"


"What if I can't do it?"


This fear, controls almost everything we do in our day to day lives.


Me, you and everybody, live in our comfort zones.


Think back to the last time you did something out of the norm.


It was probably the last time you felt real excitement and curiosity.


Your days, run on a specific structure that makes you feel safe and comfortable.


Mon- Fri: Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep.

Sat-Sun: Wake up, drink alcohol, sleep, have a hangover.

Repeat


Now, I'm not saying that structure is bad.


We need order in our life.


If it was always chaos, we would not cope.


But excitement, fun, curiosity and success, all happen outside of our comfort zone.


Today or next week, start adding new things into your life.


It doesn't have to be big, just start small.


Brush your teeth with the opposite hand.


Take a different route to work.


Wake up earlier and go for a walk.


These small things, might lead into bigger things.


Applying for a new job.


Signing up to the gym.


Going on a first date.


Your life is never going to change or improve if you just keep doing the same things.


Don't be afraid of the unknown.


I will leave you with this as Jordan Peterson says,


“Order is not enough. You can’t just be stable, and secure, and unchanging, because there are still vital and important new things to be learned. Nonetheless, chaos can be too much. You can’t long tolerate being swamped and overwhelmed beyond your capacity to cope while you are learning what you still need to know."
